Hotel Anteroom Naha GALLERY9.5 NAHA will be hosting "REGION FREE," a solo exhibition by Okinawan photographer Tokio Kuniyoshi, currently based in New York.
This exhibition connects and intersects the energy of nature and the city through the expansion of photographic expression and reinterpretation as a medium, exploring the cultures and histories rooted in the diverse lands of Okinawa and New York. This will be Kuniyoshi's first solo exhibition in Okinawa, and will feature prints of New York landscapes and people on Ryukyu limestone and Okinawan shell ginger paper, works inspired by the traditional Okinawan pattern "Minsa," and a collaborative work with artist BANKIYO, who also has ties to Okinawa.
The exhibition is open to the public, so we look forward to your visit.

With one week remaining until the end of the exhibition, we will be holding a pre-closing reception.
We will welcome Jun Kanna from the architecture industry for a cross-talk about his thoughts on his creative endeavors, the behind-the-scenes work, and his perspectives on working globally.
We will also be featuring a groundbreaking Ryukyuan dance performance by Chie Fukushima, a Ryukyuan performing arts performer featured in one of the exhibition's signature works, "Region Free "Chie Fukushima."
Lounge hours will be extended on the day, and drinks and snacks will be available at special prices.

Highlights of the Exhibition
Over 200 photographs / A world-first photo exhibition.
Tokio Kuniyoshi will be showcasing photographs he has taken in Okinawa and New York in a variety of formats. This will be his largest solo exhibition in Okinawa, featuring a series of over 100 photographs and collaborative works with local artists.
His works, the world's first to be printed on Ryukyu limestone, are a captivating sight as the artist's unique perspective blends seamlessly with nature, opening viewers to a new perspective.
The light streaming through the large glass windows changes with the passing of time, from morning to day to night, making this a truly captivating experience.
Artist Presence: Tokio Kuniyoshi, a New York resident, will be in Okinawa at the beginning and end of the exhibition.
This is a rare opportunity to speak directly with him about his work, his creative process, and life as an artist abroad.

Tokio Kuniyoshi / Tokio Kuniyoshi
Born in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. Currently residing in New York.
He traveled to the United States in 2002 and studied photography in San Francisco for four years.
In 2006, he moved to New York in search of new possibilities.
While primarily focusing on portraiture, he also focuses on exhibiting fine art photography, exhibiting extensively both domestically and internationally and winning numerous awards in competitions.
He also explores installations and experimental forms of expression using photography as a medium.
On November 30, 2024, he will be speaking as a guest at "Dreams and Schools," an experiential workshop based on the concept of dream lessons, to be held at Naha City Kainan Elementary School.
