A Grove of Swaying Itobasho Trees
Deep in the forest, itobasho trees spread their broad leaves. A relative of the banana plant, they produce small fruit and striking flowers. Their leaves have long been used as natural wrappers, much like a furoshiki for onigiri. The fibers of itobasho are woven into bashofu, a breathable and durable textile that has been passed down as a traditional kimono fabric suited to Okinawa’s subtropical climate.
